II Ecopoltur / IGU Tourism Regional Conference:
Challenges and commitments of tourism in the contemporary world
Belém, Brazilian Amazon
August 18th-21st 2025
The IGU Tourism Commission is delighted to collaborate on the II Ecopoltur conference:
Challenges and commitments of tourism in the contemporary world
Belém, August 18th-21st
From the return of tourist mobility, old problems associated with mass tourism, such as overtourism and the impact of digital platforms on tourist accommodation and local real estate markets, have once again plagued local populations living in cities with great tourist appeal. Such occurrences put the possibilities of tourism effectively contributing to the construction of a "new normal", based on socially and environmentally more committed practices and in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, under strain.
It is clear that the kind of tourism we want must be committed, even indirectly, to all the goals of the 2030 Agenda, such as the protection of life on land, the eradication of poverty and "zero hunger". In view of this, the II Ecopoltur aims to consolidate itself as an international forum for qualified debate on the economic activity of tourism, considering its economic, political and socio-spatial dimensions. In addition, it aims to strengthen institutional ties with different institutions as well as with sectors of civil society that have guidelines that converge with the interests of more responsible tourism, since, among Ecopoltur's many demands, the need to think about and put into practice an alternative to predatory tourism is one of the central elements that the event aims to put into practice.
Given the Amazonian context, in which debates about impacts on nature are the order of the day, this event goes beyond academic walls and remains an important multi- and transdisciplinary space.
More information will be available soon. Hope to see you in Brazil in August 2025!
